One more day and a bit to capture your observations!

Hope everyone has been having fun this weekend! We were off to a slow start with the not so nice weather Friday-Saturday, but today and tomorrow are much more welcoming, so we're looking forward to further observations getting added for the coming week. We'll have a bunch of visual and audio uploads from Latimer Park, Keery Park and several local parks in west Cloverdale to add for the City of Surrey's account in the next few days so stay tuned.

Dark morph/black squirrels

I have gotten very fond of the dark-furred eastern gray squirrels, as one might guess from my profile picture. I get to see them on a regular basis where I currently live, but I will be relocating very soon to the Southern Tier area of NY state and of all the things I am worried about missing, the black squirrels are very high on the list.
I have tried noodling around on the internet to try to see if there are any near where I will be living and exploring. I found an iNat project ca...

A Guide to the Desert Stink Beetles of the United States, Canada, and Baja California

For many months now I have had the idea to write a guide for the tribe Amphidorini, where I could cover every species known and provide information to identify them. Last month I finally decided that I would commit to writing it and I have gotten a decent amount of progress since then, though I am still on Blapylis. Despite the title, I will also include information for those species from Mainland Mexico and Guatemala, they just have so little information that I do not realty think they ...

My Third Hike - Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park

For my third hike I went to Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in Oakland. I ended up trekking along the Graham and West Ridge Trail. It was a sunny day with light winds and zero clouds in the sky. It was fairly cool although I felt a bit too warm underneath my jacket. I didn't see much wildlife other than the occasional squirrel and some corvids squawking hear and there. There where quite a lot of people hiking along the trails and many of them had brought dogs. Some of which either didn't...

Update Friday morning

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the 2024 Friends of Cave Creek Canyon BioBlitz thus far! I am heading to the canyon shortly to document more species but first wanted to share this quick update:

The BioBlitz got off to a wild and windy start on Thursday, April 25th. Seventeen 7th grade students from Center for Academic Excellence (Douglas) braved the high winds and arrived at the Visitor Information Center (VIC) at 10:00 a.m. They spent the next five hours exploring...

One more day of exploring Krakow biodiversity

Dear friends,

Another day of our wonderful challenge. We have a sunny day and I hope you have a nice time outside (with a few new observations of course).

There is still one day tomorrow to make observations and a few days to upload/identify them. Therefore, If you still have the strength and time to do some photos, it would be perfect. Compared to other cities, Krakow is in the upper half of the leaderboard with the neighbors Bratislava and České Budějovice.

Lake Creek Dam Herps of Texas report, 27Apr2024

Due to construction at Berry Springs Park and Preserve, there was a small group outing to Lake Creek Dam this month.
Five amphibian species were observed in the creek and nearby dry block limestone wall: Rio Grande Leopard Frog (CI = 1), Gulf Coast Toad (CI = 0), Rio Grande Chirping Frog (CI = 1), Blanchard's Cricket Frog (CI = 3), and Green Tree Frog (CI = 3). Two scorpions, several Mediterranean Geckos, and a Black-necked Garter Snake were also seen in cracks in the wall. A Rio Gra...

Tide pools in Natural Bridges

We went on a nice and a sunny day to the Natural Bridges on April 27 to explore the biodiversity of flora and fauna in marine ecosystems. It was very exciting. Then and there, the place felt very cold and was very breezy with smell from Eucalyptus trees around.

Tide pools in Natural bridges was home to may anemones, crabs, insects and plants. It gives a glimpse of life beneath the sea.We took pictures of those and on our way back from the tide pool, we saw many western gulls &amp...

Day 3: April 28, 2024

Weather-wise, today was interesting. The sun was up (-ish) at dawn, but clouds were around as well. The forecast was for rain most of the day, with some partial clouds in the morning. If we wanted to get out and not get wet, morning was our best option.

I headed to North Norwich to visit a new-to-me wetland. It did not disappoint! As soon as I got out of my car, a sandhill crane flew overhead. As soon as I turned on Merlin to see if any warblers were around, a sora called o...

24 hours to go...

We're now coming to the end of day 3 of the City Nature Challenge. Unfortunately it was a bit of a wash our here in York (and for a lot of the UK by the looks of things) but we've still managed to get some more observations taking our total number of species up to 100, which is a fantastic milestone to have reached. Don't forget the challenge continues until midnight on the 29th so there's still plenty of time to get out and start recording!
